Every day of our life we can change the look of our teeth solely based on what we eat and drink each day. Many of our lifestyle choices, including soda or your morning coffee, can impact the gradual discoloring of your teeth. You may look in the mirror one day wanting your bright, white smile back!
There are different types of stains that can affect your teeth. Most of the stains on your teeth can be easily treated by tooth whitening, called extrinsic stains. These are stains on the outside of your teeth. Sometimes the inner structure of your tooth is yellowed or stained, and these cannot be changed with conventional whitening. These are called “intrinsic” stains. Some examples of each include:
Extrinsic Stains Caused by (Easy to Whiten):
- Tea
- Coffee
- Wine
- Smoking
Intrinsic Stains Caused by:
- Antibiotics (ex: tetracycline)
- Nerve damage
- Blood vessel damage
- Inner portion of the tooth yellows and enamel lightens overtime allowing it to show through
We are happy to take a look at your teeth during a consultation and give you our recommendation on if tooth whitening is right for you. If you are unable to have tooth whitening, don’t worry! There are other options for you. Our staff can share information with you about composites and veneers.
These procedures are simple and effective and can change your smile for years to come!
